The Freddie Mac Foundation launched its first Wednesday's Child program in 1992 in Washington, DC. Since that date, the Foundation expanded to four additional cities: New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. The mission of Wednesday's Child is to increase the number of adoptions of children in foster care who have traditionally been considered hard-to-place through the use of electronic and print media, public relations efforts, and awareness-building events. In addition, Wednesday's Child promotes public awareness about the need for adoptive homes for America's foster children. Through these efforts, Wednesday's Child has helped more than 1,000 youngsters find a loving, permanent home.

Each week, Wednesday's Child introduces local viewers to one or more children awaiting adoption. Filmed at child-favorite locations - such as zoos, theme parks and shopping malls - and hosted by a well-known member of a local television team, the segments give viewers a glimpse of each child's interests and dreams of finding their "forever family."

Beginning on Nov. 15, 2000, Fox 5, with host Amanda Davis, began featuring a child(ren) needing an adoptive home each Wednesday during the 6:00 pm news, and then again on Sunday during the 10 pm news.
