What is Podcasting ?

Podcasting is a way of delivering audio and/or video content to your local computer, or to your mobile device. It was first used by iPodders, or those who use iPods, but has generalized to refer to any type of local or mobile device, such as a laptop, desktop, or Zune (the new Microsoft device).  Podcasts are generally either MP3 (audio) or MP4 (video) files. The podcasts used for Wednesday's Child are MP4 files.  Each weekly episode of Wednesday's Child is a new podcast, which you can download. Then, you can show these podcasts to others from your laptop, iPod, etc. without needing to access the internet, and you may have all of the episodes handy if you like.

In order to collect and automatically receive the latest podcast onto your machine, you will need a "podcatcher," which uses RSS ("Really Simple Syndication") for subscription to new episodes. Podcatchers work in the background while your machine is running if you allow them, so they can receive the latest podcast as soon as it is available.

One of the best known podcatchers is iTunes, which can be downloaded at: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download .  In order to subscribe to the Wednesday's Child podcast using iTunes, you can do the following:

1. Open iTunes.

2. Click on "Advanced".

3. Click on "Subscribe to Podcast".

4. Copy the web address below into the textbox which pops up:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/wednesdayschildga

5. You should then see a new Podcast in your iTunes, called Wednesday's Child, and it should begin downloading the latest podcast immediately.

6. You can set your preferences in iTunes for podcasts. Click on Edit/Preferences/Podcasts, and you will have the opportunity to check for new episodes hourly, daily or weekly; download all episodes, or only the most recent; and keep all episodes, or only the most recent.

You can also set yourself up to receive an email each time a new episode is posted, by clicking on the "Subscribe to podcast by email" button on the Wednesday's Child home page.
